Dams in La Union

Protecting Our Community from Flooding

La Union sits just below a series of critical flood control structures that help protect our homes, farmland, and infrastructure from stormwater damage. These dams and drainage systems are part of a larger watershed strategy designed to reduce erosion, manage runoff, and prevent disasters like the one our community faced in 2013.

Our Dams

  • A Dam and B Dam
Located upstream of the La Union townsite, these two dams are essential for capturing and slowing stormwater during heavy rainfall. They help reduce the risk of flash flooding and erosion in residential and agricultural areas.
  • Gardner Dam
Positioned near the western edge of the district, Gardner Dam plays a key role in diverting runoff away from vulnerable low-lying zones, including Koogle Road. It supports long-term flood control, soil stabilization, and helps protect key infrastructure from stormwater damage.
  • Alvarez Dam
Serving the southeastern portion of La Union, Alvarez Dam helps manage water flow from surrounding hills and contributes to erosion prevention near key roadways and properties.

Stormwater Ponds in La Union

In addition to our dams, La Union is protected by a network of stormwater ponds that help manage runoff, reduce erosion, and prevent flooding during heavy rains. These ponds are strategically placed to support dam overflow and improve drainage throughout the watershed.

Our Ponds

  • Pond A & Pond B
Located directly below A Dam and B Dam, these ponds are designed to hold excess water in the event of dam overflow. They serve as a critical buffer between the upstream dams and the La Union townsite.
  • Paloma Pond
Positioned near Paloma Drive, this pond helps manage runoff from surrounding residential areas and supports downstream drainage.
  • Cruz Pond
Located near Cruz Street, this pond captures stormwater from nearby slopes and roadways, reducing erosion and protecting local infrastructure.
  • Alvarez Pond
Situated near Alvarez Dam, this pond provides additional flood control and helps regulate water flow from the southeastern portion of the watershed.
  • Mendez Pond
Doña Ana County Flood Commission is currently working on a new stormwater pond near Mendez Street, designed to improve drainage and reduce localized flooding in one of La Union’s most flood-prone areas. This project reflects our ongoing commitment to proactive planning and community safety.
